volume-1 (v.1)

Summary

I collaborated with other designers to design the Fall 2024 issue of volume-1 (v.1), a student-run literary publication at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).

I also designed window vinyl for a temporary installation during RISD's Families Weekend.

Developing a Bespoke Website for v.1's First Ever Web Issue

I collaborated with designers Sarah Qianyin Feng and Nadine Macapagal to develop volume-1's first ever web-exclusive issue!

The editors published a call for web-based work which we then curated into a bespoke website. Sarah and Nadine both designed the initial sketches for the website. I coded and polished the website with HTML/CSS/Javascript.

Standardizing the Fall 2024 Issue

I collaborated with designers Sarah Qianyin Feng and Nadine Macapagal on the Fall 2024 issue. Historically, volume-1 had a wide range of formats: booklets versus newspapers, bindings, systems, printing methods, all of which pushed the design team to reinvent the wheel every semester. This time around, we were recommended to begin standardizing the format, so we used the previous Spring 2024 issue as a starting point but still tried to incorporate different elements to keep things fresh.

The main design elements were the use of windows for the cover, paper clips, linear dividers, and handwritten titles written with a sharpie. This design was influenced by an event and installation we had earlier in the semester, where we encouraged passersby to draw on colorful acetate which represented "windows." These windows were then hung together using fishingline and paperclips as part of an installation (photos at the bottom of this page).

Nadine and Sarah worked on the cover while I was primarily responsible for the interior template (but we all had input on the overall design). Sarah worked on the centerfold design, and we both designed the spreads using the template we ended up with. The handmade lettering was done by Ameer Tarawneh who wasn't in v.1 but is part of the RISD community as a BFA GD student.

Selected spreads that I designed are found below. Illustrations and images by the respective authors.

Installation Vinyl

As part of the installation in RISD's Color Lab, I was asked to design vinyl text for the front window. The text was written by the editorial staff.
