I designed a satirical brand identity for a speculative perfume brand which talks about the politics of scents, chemicals, and chemical warfare.
Please see the related project Perfume Calendar on my website.
This case study is a work in progress.
The name of the brand was inspired by the Musee de l'Orangerie which I visited many years ago. "Orangerie" is a greenhouse or conservatory for orange trees, so I thought it was ironic to create a brand called Agent de l'Orangerie since Agent Orange was used to destroy jungles or hiding spots for the Viet Cong. Agent Orange and other "Rainbow Herbicides" continue to have long lasting health effects on Vietnamese people and Vietnam War veterans.
I created a wordmark and a brand guidelines for this speculative brand. The color palette was drawn from my six fictional fragrances (Orange Blossom, Perfume River, Casualties, Acetone, Incense, and Condensed Milk).
The packages I designed also contain inserts and paper test strips. The inserts or mini "zines" provide a short description about the fragrance, various diagrams describing the perfume notes, and other content related to scent and Vietnam.
One set of paper strips are shaped like bottles and re found inside the packages. The bottles have questions asking the viewer to consider their biases or other questions related to smell.
